This feels like a little bit of a miss-step.Īll in all, this book is a little bit messy and a little bit over-simplified.
It's quite thin, it's written style feels quite dumbed-down and there doesn't appear to be any formula to when/where character bios seem to appear, considering the bulk of the book is written in a decade-by-decade structure.Īlso, and perhaps this is just me (as a huge Kirby fan), but the book seems to want to give Stan Lee equal billing in Cap's creation and set-up as an important and regular Marvel feature, alongside Simon and Kirby, when Stan Lee had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of Captain America. Unfortunately, when compared to similar books, also produced by DK, such as Avengers Encyclopedia, or Marvel Year By Year, or even The DC Comics Encyclopedia, this book pales significantly. The selected artwork pieces are all nice and well-framed, and there is an adequate amount of information regarding most of Cap's most important storylines. On its own merit, this is large-page DK book is an ok guide to one of Marvels oldest (and one of my favourite) heroes. "The whole thing is wonderfully illustrated with images.including huge, two-page spreads that make Captain America seem bigger than life.
